They left on Noah's Ark

coffee is familiar, a friend for many years
hot to my lips i bring it, just like the old cold beers
i wake up twice, once in my bed, another way out west
i look around for answers but there's no questions on the test
what have you all been up to? what have you all done?
what charms have you let loose upon the world
like bullets from a gun
nobody ever answers, no diamonds and no pearls
in the ashes rises up the ghosts
in the wind they whirl
the ghosts
my, how they whirl

i was hoping to arrange a day
but birds got in the way
i was thinking i might wind a watch
but time just makes me pay
i was looking for another love
i was dancing in the dark
the people who once ran the place
all left on Noah's Ark
they didn't even say
goodbye

the trees are cold in early spring
they are silent without wind
they never bother anyone
until they come crashing right on in
this one is sending forth all its little buds
this other one is hoarding everything its ever done
i'm hoping to discover an invitation, if you please
i'm hoping for redemption among the silent trees
silent trees

beneath the earth, my country
beneath the gloomy sky
the bones of all who used to dance
cannot even try
beneath the earth, my country
tis of this and that
get yourself a flag, boys
wrap yourself in that
in that

i was hoping to arrange a day
but birds got in the way
i was thinking i might wind a watch
but time just makes me pay
i was looking for another love
i was dancing in the dark
the people who once ran the place
all left on Noah's Ark
they didn't even say
goodbye
