The fool no longer pretending

not so much a moon selected
or an earth found by default
nor sky, nor cloud, nor bird inspected
in this broad and golden vault
to put light upon the query
and illuminate the dark
will pass the time but not the space
of shadows sharp and stark

would you find a comfort
in this world of weal and woe
would you find a hearth and hope
a "yes" where lies a "no?"
would you stammer any less
if all veils were tossed aside
would in the garments that then drifted
your fancies crawl inside?

nothing is revealed to you
no lightning yet exists
that takes observers out of selves
into objective bliss
the fool who trundles down the hill
and knows he knows it not
will surely make his way to town
just as surely he did not

not so much a moon selected
or an earth found by default
nor sky, nor cloud, nor bird inspected
in this broad and golden vault
to put light upon the query
and illuminate the dark
will pass the time but not the space
of shadows sharp and stark
