Muertos

death is not a stranger
or some distant relative:
death is our shadow.
it exists because
 we dance in the light

As the world flies by...

children are often curious
their parents are sometimes furious
the flames are burning high
we are watching them, you and i
you and i

the people are sometimes sad
the news is mostly bad
but we hold each other
for now, none other
just you and i
just you and i
as the world flies by

fly, fly, fly
bring your body
or leave it behind
as the world flies by
just you and i
we hold each other
we hold each other
we hold each other
into the night

we saw the new moon above the water
silver dad and mother/daughter
the waves break like your heart on the shore
like a thousand times before
we always ask for more
just you and i

not everyone stays up all night
can't all make it to the morning light
between the clouds and the deep blue sea
there is something for you and me
but it doesn't matter
it doesn't matter
as the world flies by

fly, fly, fly
bring your body
or leave it behind
as the world flies by
just you and i
we hold each other
we hold each other
we hold each other
into the night

the people are sometimes sad
the news is mostly bad
but we hold each other
for now, none other
just you and i
just you and i
as the world flies by

I Just Couldn't Go

a wizard made the coffee
a saint whipped up some eggs
a shaman from the hinterlands
served beer from magic kegs

there was vodka from arabia
jinn danced upon the rim
there were artifacts of mountebanks
looking very grim

i shook loose from the orchestra
and stumbled to the edge
if i could cry in sorrow
i might just stay off the ledge
but i couldn't go
i just couldn't go
i just couldn't go
no, no

i heard the jangling of the janitor
his keys were made of fire
he turned the locks down by the docks
and tied me up with wire

i fell down to the bottom deck
inside the mystery ship
we sailed out of a nightmare
and took a little trip
but i couldn't go
i just couldn't go
i just couldn't go
no, no

there were little pills of energy
that lit the night fantastic
i broke out of my prison cell
'cuz i was made of plastic

i jumped into the ocean
and smoked clouds upon the sea
i never could remember
what had become of me
but then was not the time to fix
the errors of my ways
i fell upon a glowing beach
and shook my fists at waves
because I couldn't go
i just couldn't go
no, no, no

The Blandishments of Autumn

surrounded by the self
nothing but the self
the wheel turns and turns
always arriving
always departing

Until She Started to Sing

she needed someone who could tighten the bottles
she wanted someone who couldn't yank on her string
she could have used a giant umpire
to call her out when she started to sing

she took her pills to the edge of the forest
she wanted to get high with the deer at the spring
she wanted to dance like a gypsy in autumn
she took her pills, didn't feel a thing
until she started to sing

la la, la la la la
la la, la la la
la, la
la, la, la, lay la la
la, la

when you're the boss ain't nobody to boss you
when you're the queen, people got to shut up
when you're the master all the slaves keep it quiet
the goddess drinks from a special cup

ain't nobody who can tell you nothin'
can't tell you no, oh no, you'd better not
ain't nobody who can remove the throttle
pretty soon nobody is all you got

la la, la la la la
la la, la la la
la, la
la, la, la, lay la la
la, la

the floor is cool to lay upon
the tile is silver and covered in blood
ain't nobody to tell you uh-uh, no, no
they'll find your body after the flood

she needed someone who could tighten the bottles
she wanted someone who couldn't yank on her string
she could have used a giant umpire
to call her out when she started to sing

she took her pills to the edge of the forest
she wanted to get high with the deer at the spring
she started to dance like a gypsy in autumn
she took her pills, didn't feel a thing
until she started to sing

la la, la la la la
la la, la la la
la, la
la, la, la, lay la la
la, la
