Hawthorne Bridge, July 4th, 2011

For a brief time on the 4th of July, just before the fireworks display, pedestrians were told to leave the Hawthorne Bridge--the prevailing wind, one theory goes, was such that it would blow the fireworks at the people crowding the bridge. The folks who were lining the bridge for a good view of the show were told to leave by police, soon after they were allowed back, then were told half-heartedly to leave again, then finally were allowed to stay and watch the fireworks fired from the barge now stationed in the Willamette River (halfway between the Marquam Bridge/I5 overpass and the Hawthorne Bridge). Before the issue was settled, when the crowds were still massed at either end but not on the main expanse, I took a quick digital image of the deserted bridge near the movable deck, something I would not otherwise have had the opportunity to witness...so it goes.
