GOD SHED YOUR TEARS ON THEE

Let me tell you a little story about a place I know
Where the future once beckoned and the sky did glow
Where the thunder and the lightning became the rain
Where the laughter and the cheering drowned out the pain
The pain of being alive

It is America, it is America
A peace loving nation that is always at war
America, oh, America
God shed your tears on thee
Some of us just couldn’t see
God shed your tears on thee

The world beat a path to our front door, we came by boat and plane
We came with the wind and the tide, we jumped right onto that train
We weren’t perfect, we were self-possessed, a little hard headed, a little righteous
It took a war between the states to end slavery, it took more than a Judas kiss
To do the right thing

It is America, it is America
A peace loving nation that is always at war
America, oh, America
God shed your tears on thee
Some of us just couldn’t see
God shed your tears on thee

We have come to a critical stage, where god and love start to equal rage
Some are praying for the end, why read a book when you can burn a page?
But I will say until my dying day: this is the place where the music plays
Where the band is the people and the people all dance and the people all sway
Don't ever let them stop the dance

It is America, it is America
A peace loving nation that is always at war
America, oh, America
God shed your tears on thee
Some of us just couldn’t see
God shed your tears on thee

Let me tell you a little story about a place I know
Where the future once beckoned and the sky did glow
Where the thunder and the lightning became the rain
Where the laughter and the cheering drowned out the pain
The pain of being alive

It is America, it is America
A peace loving nation that is always at war
America, oh, America
God shed your tears on thee
Some of us just couldn’t see
God shed your tears on thee
