From the Archives

all the birds up in the tree
some for you and some for me
sitting for eternity
sitting in the tree

all the birds fly on the wind
and then they all come back again
the air is rushing over them
all the birds fly on the wind

all the clouds are floating by
saying hi and saying bye
never, ever asking why
clouds forever rolling by

tracing circles in the air
tracing circles everywhere
are you here or are you there?
tracing circles in the air

the snow, the rain, the wind and light
sometimes black and sometimes white
they shine forever, day and night
the snow, the rain, the wind and light

did you like to sing this song
not about what's right or wrong
not too short and not too long
did you like to sing this song?

Whither now, when withering beckons?

'Stars, darkness, a lamp, a phantom, dew, a bubble, a dream, a flash of lightning and a cloud - thus should we look upon the world... Vajrachhedika Sutra (Diamond Cutter Sutra)

my bounded entity is unbound
i feel my heart all around
when I close my eyes
i find a new disguise
and up ain't always up when you go down

sunglasses in heaven

where did the thing come from
where did it begin
what is it made of
what do i win

they came to be, then came to me
they sang about jesus
how he will set me free
but what was jesus made of
where did his story begin
why did we need saving
who invented sin

god is awful silent
but she sings in the wind
he is a mystery
took the earth for a spin
gave us the seasons
gave us the night
we invented sunglasses
after god invented light
after god invented light
he ran naked in the dark night
she ran naked in the dark night
that's right
that's right

you want a body for labor
you want a soul for heaven
you want a god to save your ass
when you run out of sevens
well, listen up, jimmy
and listen good
it ain't quite what it seems
the waters start in snow and ice
and run to New Orleans
the water runs to New Orleans

god is awful silent
but she sings in the wind
he is a mystery
took the earth for a spin
gave us the seasons
gave us the night
we invented sunglasses
after god invented light
after god invented light
he ran naked in the dark night
she ran naked in the dark night
that's right
that's right

where did the thing come from
where did it begin
what is it made of
what do i win

Cook Me Inside Out

we have a monster who performs a trick or two
makes lightning in the morning dew, quite a stew
lights up the stadium where kids kick the balls
until the kids all fall
down
all fall down

split the atom and collect the change
cool your heels, put out the flames
the waters rise, the waves arrive
happy to meet you, happy to be alive
happy until the kids all fall
down
happy until the kids fall down

flick on a switch
make the pinballs go round and round
make me a coffee
with electric glowing grounds
going round
plug in the iMac
before the juice is gone
and something goes wrong
cook me inside out

we have a gentleman from Shangri-La
he took a plug to the Himalayas
give me a mountain and a three prong plug
i am become death, happy to give a hug
happy until the kids all fall
down
all fall down

i get the jitters when the ground starts to shake
i got a feeling we're all going to bake
they say that heaven was too much to load
eternity wasn't built to code...happy, oh, oh
happy until the kids all fall
down
happy until the kids fall down

flick on a switch
make the pinballs go round and round
make me a coffee
with electric glowing grounds
going round
plug in the iMac
before the juice is gone
and something goes wrong
cook me inside out

Hello Desert

did you dance among the women
did you hold their hands at night
did the music provide rhythm
did you scratch and claw and bite?

when you vanished in the desert
and the stars refused to fall
did you listen for coyotes
did they answer when you called?

On my nightstand...*

on my nightstand
they wait like commuters
dreaming of the MAX:
rumi, twain, jung, campbell
inner, outer, inner and a witness

my radio will not play KBOO
my books will not board the train
one or two cats will visit
and drink from my water glass
and leave their spit like a gratuity

on my nightstand
the world shares its crumbs
and i eat them greedily
aware that the cats may arrive
at any moment
perhaps this one

Seattle Dan was writing a blog post about baseball books and Opening Day, and at the end of his piece he asked a question: So what's on your nightstand? The poem seen above is my response. Now buy me something.

Random Thought

the clock is ticking
one day it will blow up
and time will be a mess

In the Meantime We Will Fly

we rose from water, we rose from the sea
the salty air, was everywhere, the salty air was free
the tide brought us to eden, never leaving
we were in paradise, but still we were bleeding

the shadows and the golden one, the golden sun
played hide and seek, and time to run
we could hear the howling, the mating calls
we held each other, after the fall
after the fall

we lifted our arms in thunderstorms
and lightning filled our eyes
rain became the messenger
all that lives will one day die
ah, in the meantime
in the meantime
in the meantime
we will fly

we planted seeds across the valleys
we built cathedrals and back alleys
there were dancers and musicians, listen
we were the latest edition, the latest edition of life

we lifted our arms in thunderstorms
and lightning filled our eyes
rain became the messenger
all that lives will one day die
ah, in the meantime
in the meantime
in the meantime
we will fly

we all lay down, never to rise again
we all lay down in the ocean, ocean
the tide will take all that was given
the tide will take us all

we rose from water, we rose from the sea
the salty air, was everywhere, the salty air was free
the tide brought us to eden, never leaving
we were in paradise, but still we were bleeding

the shadows and the golden one, the golden sun
played hide and seek, and time to run
we could hear the howling, the mating calls
we held each other, after the fall
after the fall

we lifted our arms in thunderstorms
and lightning filled our eyes

all that lives will one day die
ah, in the meantime
in the meantime
in the meantime

You and Me, and Everyone Else

in a former life, i was the dog
and you were the master
yelling faster
in a former life, i was the sea
and you were the mountains
with beautiful fountains

you and me
you and me
we were children in darkness
we lit the candles, to light up the sky
for one glorious night
we remember
you and me
you and me
and everyone else

back at the hideout, i liked to shout
you liked the choir
putting wings on desire
back at the hideout, people devolved
into the oceans
defeating the potions

at an old address, i was a mess
and you were the landlord
owned an old Ford
at an old address, i confessed
that i really loved you
i wanted more
sometimes the song just goes on and on

you and me
you and me
we were children in darkness
we lit the candles, to light up the sky
for one glorious night
we remember
you and me
you and me
and everyone else

da da dada da da da dada da da
da da dada da da da dada da da
da da dada da da da dada da da
da da dada da da da dada da da

in a former life, i was the dog
and you were the master
yelling faster
in a former life, i was the sea
and you were the mountains
with beautiful fountains

you and me
you and me
we were children in darkness
we lit the candles, to light up the sky
for one glorious night
we remember
you and me
you and me
and everyone else

at an old address, i confessed
that i really loved you

Here, at the end of the song*...

the will to survive is a tricky one
the will to deny's just as strong
she ran to the edge of her borderland
she ran to the end of the song
where something, some something went wrong

the weight of the sky is deniable
the weight of the fall is supreme
she fell like a prisoner in paradise
she cried to the end of the song
where something, some something went wrong

why aren't you on fire?
why aren't you a god?
why aren't you practicing happiness?
did something, some something go wrong?
here, at the end of the song
here, at the end of the song
something, some something, some something
here, at the end of the song

the smell of her hair was a chemical
the look in her eyes was a drug
she managed to make it, but still couldn't take it
she hid from the end of the song
where something, some something went wrong

the way that she walked was sheer artistry
the way that she laughed was a bomb
she had the key to eternity
she thought that she had it all wrong
where something, some something went wrong

why aren't you on fire?
why aren't you a god?
why aren't you practicing happiness?
did something, some something go wrong?
here, at the end of the song
here, at the end of the song
something, some something, some something
here, at the end of the song

the will to survive is a tricky one
the will to deny's just as strong
she ran to the edge of her borderland
she ran to the end of the song
where something, some something went wrong

the weight of the sky is deniable
the weight of the fall is supreme
she fell like a prisoner in paradise
she cried to the end of the song
where something, some something went wrong
