We're All Just Rescues

when you are driving, you look at the scenery
fleeting quick glances, like prey at the lake
you might see a sad wee mammal
one who cries, one who weeps

you might find a bird in the meadow
broken wing, so close, so far
holding so gently, still alive now
hold it so softly, carry it home
the one who is crying, the one who weeps

or maybe a dog, too frightened to sit still
wandering, cowering, hungry and cold
there is a lady, she pulls her car over
she finds a way to carry it home

(chorus)
oh, please, carry me home
mother and father are gone in the wind
oh, please, i am so hungry
i am just one of so very many
so very many, gone in the wind
do what you will, do what you choose
in the last chapter, we're all just rescues

here is the woman, who whispers so softly
maybe she's burnt by the ways of the world
still, she holds blankets and food for the child
all of the lost are children to her

poor little thing, poor little bird
poor little animal, poor little girl
poor little miracle, so close to dying
poor little sweetheart, lost in the world

we can't save them all, the angels all nodded
we can't make sorrow just go away
some of the others pay no attention
rescuing as many that come by their way

(chorus)
oh, please, carry me home
mother and father are gone in the wind
oh, please, i am so hungry
i am just one of so very many
so very many, gone in the wind
do what you will, do what you choose
in the last chapter, we're all just rescues
all of the lost are children to her
