King of the Porcupines

he had a country in his head

clouds above his creaking bed

children ran to denver in his mind

he was king of the porcupines

went into town

gave the lord a dressing down

bought a gun, then bought another

got some gum and a card for mother

there's a church 

some say historical

some say jesus

some say the devil

some don't speak at all

they're taking over the world

they're running the country

what's it all for

he just closed the door

dad moved around

ran in the ground

he left his room

he left tomorrow

he left all the remnants

that he once had borrowed

now at the church

skin as dark as sorrow

he joined them in prayer

pulled out his gun
