Stickball

my sister down on her day just a bit
i used to call her now and again
but she don't call back
and now it's just
me in the world
reaching out for someone
who ain't even there
just a wisp in the air
everywhere

my friend said bye to Willie Mays
and i said hi
to the say heys
the miracle plays
the home run trots
to stickball in the streets
you don't need cleats
ain't no cleats round here

did you see all those kids
some are hungry, some are sick
some are laughing like St. Nick
they got a stick
they got a street
they're still there
water from the hydrant
water from the river
water from the sky
just enough for you and i

who even smiles at the day?
who even stops to say hi
to say hey
who runs the bases
among all those old faces
i can't see hers
